Republic of the Marshall Islands President Christopher J. Loeak is expected to depart early next month to attend the 13th Micronesian Presidents’ Summit (MPS) in Koror, Palau. The MPS, held from 10-11 July at the Ngarachamayong Cultural Center will also coincide with Palau’s Constitution Day.

The MPS is composed of the Presidents of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Republic of Palau, and the Federated States of Micronesia that meet annually to discuss matters of common interest to the three nations. The meeting is intended to communicate national, regional, and international issues of mutual importance, including the Micronesia Challenge, climate change, fisheries, compact impact, among others.

This meeting will also give the RMI an opportunity to discuss with Leaders on the arrangements and key issues for the upcoming Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) summit. The RMI, as the host of the PIF, has made climate change the core issue for the September meeting. Climate change is clearly one of the most important sustainable development issues for the Pacific Island Countries given their vulnerabilities and existential threat posed by climate change to our long term security and livelihood. The Majuro Declaration for Climate Leadership will be this year’s signature PIF outcome, and will provide an opportunity for Micronesia to showcase our own commitments and aspirations, as well, as encourage others to take ambitious actions. The Declaration will serve as powerful input to the many international processes such as the UNFCCC, SIDS and the UN Secretary General’s proposed forum on climate change.

The RMI last hosted the MPS in July last year.
