During a credential ceremony held February 19, at the Cabinet Conference Room, President Christopher J. Loeak accepted the Letter of Credence and welcomed Republic of India Ambassador Amit Dasgupta to the Republic of the Marshall Islands and to his new post as India Ambassador to the Republic of the Marshall Islands.

The Republic of the Marshall Islands and the Republic of India established diplomatic ties on February 2, 1997. Since then the two countries have collaborated on many initiatives and undertakings, including; India’s strong support of the UN Special Rapporteur’s on the US testing program in the Marshall Islands, the ongoing work on the tax information exchange program, cooperative assistance from India for alternative and renewable energy projects, among others.

President Loeak stated, “I know that in you, the mission of India to the Republic of the Marshall Islands is in very capable and committed hands. I wish you a most successful tour of duty to our country.”

Ambassador Dasgupta said that he looks forward to working closely with the Marshall Islands Government in exploring further opportunities and to expand and strengthen further the close ties between the two countries. He expressed India’s interest in assisting the RMI with the upcoming Pacific Islands forum in September and providing RMI with areas of assistance, such as, doctors, nursing, IT trainings, scholarships, and technical trainings for Government and NGOs.

Ambassador Dasgupta is making his round of calls on government officials, the diplomatic corps, and members of the community with departure scheduled for February 21.
