The College of the Marshall Islands, a community college located in the warm central Pacific six degrees north of the Equator on Majuro atoll, seeks a qualified person to join its leadership team.

POSITION: Agricultural Researcher

General Description

Under the direction of the Cooperative Research and Extension (CRE) Dean, the Agriculture
Researcher supports the operations of the CRE program at CMI Arrak Campus, Majuro,
Marshall Islands. The incumbent plans, organizes, and conducts applied agriculture workshops,
meetings and demonstrations in the villages, and island/atoll that supports CMI and CRE’s
mission.

Duties and Responsibilities:
 In consultation with national stakeholders and based on the objectives of the COM Plan of Work and
CMI-CRE’s Strategic Plan, writes and submits 3-4 written proposals to USDA for approval;
 Expected to perform applied research related to food security, primarily with pest control, control of
invasive species and applications for local crop production;
 Conduct test field crops - fruits and other crops in atoll soil conditions;
 Must be able to transfer knowledge to local counterparts;
 In additional to USDA grants, researcher will seek funding from local, national, and international
funding sources;
 Required to maintain at least three approved projects under the USDA-CSREES Hatch funding within
the first year of contract;
 Develop a research program addressing the nation’s needs in wanting to mitigate effects of pests and
invasive species as well as improving agriculture production and food security;
 Work closely with agriculture staff from CRE program and local agencies;
 Publish research findings in peer reviewed Journals;
 May be asked to teach a course at the college per semester;
 Develop research and extension publications for clienteles;
 Has a percentage of time responsibility to support and conduct extension activities with CRE
Extension Agents including formulation of research findings in a format suitable for extension use;
 Required to travel to outer islands/atolls to set up demonstration farms and to monitor projects;
 Trains, supervises, and assists field workers in area of specialty;
 Provide direction for the running of Land Grant agricultural projects and areas;
 Develops own monthly plan of work and submits to CRE Dean for approval;
 Works closely with Agriculture Researcher in his/her approved research projects;
 Generates reports, submits online progress reports to COM and USDA CRIS websites; follows
CRE’s 5 years strategic plan and College of Micronesia (COM) Plan of Work;
 Required to work evenings, weekends, holidays, early morning and late night depending on the nature
of the project and needs of clientele.
 Perform other duties as assigned by the CRE Dean.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:
 MS in Agricultural Science, Tropical Agriculture, Agronomy or Related field with research
experience in pest/invasive species control and agriculture
 Four (4) years full-time work experience in applied research of pests/invasive species
control, or tropical agriculture
 Has successful experience in writing grants that gets approved;
 Computer literate and familiar with publications software;
 Must be able to demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills in English;
 Able to organize and complete multiple tasks in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
Preferred qualifications:
 PhD in Agriculture, Agronomy, Entomology or other related fields from an accredited
college/university;
 Two years of full-time work in applied research in agriculture area;
 Experience in teaching college credit courses;
 Experience in feedstock and energy generation using crops/plants/trees also a plus.
 Experience with projects in atolls or island conditions.
 Excellent experience in writing grants and getting them approved;
 Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English;
 Computer skills including Microsoft Words, Excel, and publication software

Salary and Benefits Offered at the College of the Marshall Islands:

Compensation
 Salary placement is depending upon relevant education, training and experience.
